Hear me My Geek Brothers!

For today our Holy Grail is come!

Ahem... It's September 21st, 2004. Today is the DVD release date of the Original Star Wars Trilogy. Not the crap that Lucas has been putting out trying to get us to rediscover the magic that we found back in 1977.

I was 6 at the time and my Sister J, took me to see some movie called Star Wars cause it sounded cool and she figured since I was a little boy I would like Science Fiction.

I was 6, J, what the hell did I know.

She was right. As soon as I heard the first blaring note and tried to read the words on the screen I was hooked. The magic I saw on that screen was astounding to my 6 year old sensibilities. It was all real and I couldn't imagine this Galaxy that was so far far away not really existing Long long ago. I saw myself as Luke Skywalker off to save the Princess and avenge his Aunt and Uncle. I wanted to learn the way of the Jedi. I wanted to fly by the seat of my pants in the Millenium Falcon and just Know Han Solo cause he was so fucking cool.

I walked out of that theatre and I had forgotten that I didn't live with Luke, Leia, Chewie or Han. It was like walking out into a brand new world when Star Wars was over.

When Empire came out I was first in line. jumping up and down in eager anticipation. When it was over I didn't really get it. As a kid it wasn't a very good movie to me. Not like the first. Today I can appreciate every scene and Every Line and see how the characters mature. Now it's the best! (Probably cause Lucas didn't Direct it)

When Jedi Came out I nearly cried from the size of the line I found waiting. My Oldest Sister E drove me to see it and she's never on time or early. So by the time I got there, the line wrapped around the inside of Hudson Mall like a 3 mile snake. As I was standing there Dumbfounded, a friend from School saw me and Dragged me into line with him and his older brother. They were 10th in line. It was my Lucky day. I spent the whole film waiting for Luke to Confront Darth Vader (I, of course, routed for Vader cause to me Bad guys were cool. Guess that's where my fixation with Black came from). The LightSaber duel was the most passionate thing I had seen at the time. I was there with Luke and Vader as they Fought. I gripped my seat in anticipation hoping beyond all hope that Vader would make Luke his bitch. He didn't, but it's OK, Luke was the Hero and then he turned to confront The Emperer.

When all was said and done a huge weight lifted off my shoudlers. I was complete. My life had meaning because I saw all three Star Wars Movies on the Big Screen and journeyed with these characters, fought with them, And loved with them. (Can you say Slave Girl? YUMM!)

When I got in the Car 2 hours later when my sister picked me up she asked how it was. I don't remember what I said but I'm sure I said it was fantastic. At the time I was still high on adrenalin. Afterwards I was high on Roy Rogers Roast beef sandwiches with BBQ sauce. (Yummy)

So today I'm feeling like I did that day. Excited, desperate, earger to pop those DVDs into my Player and join Luke and Leia and Chewie and Han as they battle the Evil Forces of the Empire. So what if Lucas ruined the originals back in '97. It's still Magic. I just need to wait for Amazon to deliver them to me.

Sigh...

It'll never work between us, Rafael. I never did "get" the whole Star Wars thing. I even tried to watch it again recently with my kids, but... nope. It's just not me.

And I went back to brown today, too. :(

  • I remember taking my stepson to Phantom Menance. The music started, the words came up—and we looked to him to see that look of amazement and wonder.

He looked back, face wide open in silent agony, tears streaming down his face. He had dropped one of those couple seat divider thingos on his hand—ouch!

But I think he forgot all that once the lightsabres came out. And then we came out and bought the lego, and I took it for a flight around the flat. “Take that, empire scum!”

    Ah, good times.

You'll be looking forward to Star Wars III then? The bad guys might win for once!

  • Sigh...such is the life of a geek. Find a woman and as soon as they find out what you like they bolt. Sniff...it's ok I'll...sniff...get over the pain.

But seriously, There's not much to get really. I love the Movies for what they gave me as a child. I don't go around dressing like the characters or proposinbg to my GF (Yes the geek has one) dress as a Jawa.

As for looking forward to Episode III, Seeing that I can't stand any of the Characters Lucas Created for this Trilogy excpet Obi Wan and Yoda and Knowing what I do of the Ending and how everyone dies, Yes I am extremely looking forward to it. I'll be n the front row routing for the Emperor. BWAHAHAHAHAHA!

  • You will think me strange. I too recall the release of the original, but didn't go to see it. I'm not sure if it was disinterest or disallowed.

Ove the next 20 years, I made sure I didn't see any of them, and wore that fact like a badge of honour. I would leave the house when housemates wanted to watch it, you name it.

Then we had the rerelease and I succumbed. It was okay, I guess, but still something of a disappointment. I immediately likened it to losing my virginity. I had held on to that identity for 20 years, and in a moment it had gone. I could not get it back. And somehow, it didn't seem worth it.
